Rumors were circulating that both Hitler and Brown had been smuggled out of Germany. Argentina in particular maintains close ties with Germany and remain neutral throughout much of World War II. In the years after the war, the president at the time, Juan Peron secretly ordered diplomats and intelligence officers to establish escape routes so called rat lines through ports in Spain and Italy. As many as 5,000 Nazis are thought to have relocated to Argentina.
