Last week, officials in Gabon suspended access to social media platforms indefinitely. To justify the suspension, the country’s telecommunications agency said it observed “content that undermines human dignity, the country’s institutions, and national security” on digital platforms, but independent voices condemned the action as an obvious crackdown on dissent. Users of TikTok and Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, reported widespread disruptions beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18, which have widely disrupted people’s ability to communicate.
