How Do Court Records Tell Us About Women's Work and Trade?
Court records are among the best evidence that we have for the type of work and trade that women were involved in in this period. Without these yet, we wouldn't know a lot of these women's names or what kind of work they were doing. So one woman that illustrates this really well is a woman from nottingham called agnes hallam. She was involved in lots of different court cases relating to debt arising from various aspects of the brewing process. And you see here, they'll say that she owes money for malt, which is a key part of the brewingprocess. There are also cases that relate to her selling ale on to other women, and then perhaps they've not paid
