The Classification of Interchocanteric Fractures
A stable interchocanteric femoral fracture is defined as having an intact posteromedial cortex. The clinical significance of this is that it will resist medial-compressive loads once reduced. Unstable fractures include fractures with a large posteromedial fragment and reverse obliquity. Non-operative intervention can be performed with sliding hip compression screws, intermingillary hip screws otherwise known as sepalomigillary nails, and arthroplasty.
