Jimmy Carter grew up in the Jim Crow South; his father was a white supremacist. His mother took care of black patients, sharecroppers for free when they were sick. When he left home to go to the Naval Academy, he defended The first black midshipmen at the Naval Academy. And then he defended his black crewmates aboard submarine when they were discriminated against. He actually pannedered to segregationists to get there in 1970 when he was elected governor.
