But in return, it was not given great chunks of china as it wanted. And there were politicians within japan who thought the answer lay not in waiting for the european empires to deal them in, but to take what they wanted themselves. Now it may be that all these extremists would be a footnote in history had it not been for the great depression. It came at the end of the exciting, effervescent 19 twenties, the roaring twenties.
