The word cathedral only comes into use in the 15 seventies, which is pretty amazing. They've been there for a thousand years. The word cathedral has been used for less than half of their history. What cathedrals do is widely copied in the parish churches. So in the middle ages, you can say that cathedrals were where they were the great models for worship. When henry the eighth dissolved the monasteries, suddenly the cathedral were left there as giants and not pigmy parish churches.
