Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan permeates through one of the glorious Surahs in the Qur'an - Surah At-Takathur which was revealed in Makkah. The main themes of this Surah are:
Man’s strong desire for worldly wealth.
Consequences of running after worldly wealth.
The origin of the word Lahw used in the Surah is discussed at great length. Lahw essentially means entertainment of any form and it is this Lahw that keeps us busy and deviated from things that actually need our attention and interest. Our wealth and children should make us remember Allah and not be a source of distraction which distances us from Him.
Allah is telling us that we should go to the graves and remember where we are headed. This implies that the graves remind us of death. It will surely distance ourselves from the distractions of the world and make us turn to Allah with sincerity and humility.
When we wake up on the Day of Resurrection, we will be remorseful and regretful for what we had done in our worldly life without remembering about death for once. Allah says in this Surah that these people will soon come to know after they have been buried. Death is something both the believer and disbeliever have Yaqeen or certainty in. we will witness the hellfire staring at us as if it is going to pounce at us and then we will regain our senses on the harsh and tomentous reality waiting for us which Allah has warned us about time and time again in the Qur'an.
We have a lot more blessings or Na'eem than the companions of Allah's Messenger ﷺ. We will be held accountable for all this on the Judgment Day and need to face the plethora of questions that will be put forth our way. And yet the sad relity of today is that we as Muslims have started to compete with each other for blessings (Na'eem). We should fear that we will be asked about the more we have too.
