The two features of norman society that were distinctive were the scandinavian ancestry of its rulers and its political cohesion. Was there such a thing as a single norman world? Were these desperate groups? Did they see themselves as ones of norman empire at any point? Only in battle rhetoric, when you're standing there on the battlefield and somebody er, well, these invented speeches. The central argument of this book is that behind the legends about the normans, their successes owed much to timing and to their leaders.
