Pseudo-Tumor Formation in a Metal on Polyethylene Total Hip Replacement
A pseudo-tumor is a type of adverse local tissue reaction that has become associated with metal on metal joint failures. Adverse local tissue reactions are thought to occur due to the body's response to metal ions, wear debris, and corrosive products. The taper interface also provides a setting where this process can occur. Fritting and corrosion damage to the taper interface have been linked to pseudo-Tumor formation for both metal on metal and metal on polyethylene joints.
