The Left's Debate on What We Really Need

I would like us to have a debate opening up, particularly the left should be pioneering this more. I think Marxists and socialists have been very good at recognizing that there's nothing particularly inevitable about capitalist mode of production. But they're much less ready to accept that there is nothing necessarily necessary about the consumerist mode of consumption that's gone together with it. We want what I've sometimes called to begin to imagine a less instrumental and acquisitive way of living.
