The Three Phases of Plato's Writings
There are at least 28 of Plato's works that I consider authentic. We find that they fall into three phases, which with startling innovation, we scholars call early middle and late. So what I'd like to do is just briefly summarize one dialogue from each of those three periods: an early dialogue, a middle period dialogue, and a lay one. In Lakeys, Socrates has Socrates engage two famous Athenian military men on the topic because they might be expected to know what courage is. And so gradually Socrates undermines all the various attempts to define courage. None of them is able to survive as a universal definition of courage. And so the dialogue ends negatively.
