The Benefits of Metal on Polyethylene Bearing Surfaces
Cement is a grout that provides initial and long-term stability. Cemented femoral stems are preferred for irradiated bone due to the bone's limited ability for in-growth. Metal on polyethylene, where the metal is typically a cobalt chrome femoral head on a polyethylene acetabular liner has longer track record of bearing surfaces. Disadvantages include higher wear and osteolysis rate compared to metal on metal and ceramics. It has increased metal ions in ceram and urine, specifically 5 to 10 times normal.
