The Spanish Civil War and Franco's Dilemma
There's a long tradition of anti-Semitism in the Catholic, the Spanish Church going back to the Spanish and Spanish position. The majority of the Catholic hierarchy believed in the ideas of the Jewish Bolshevik Masonic conspiracy. There was a lot of anti-clericalism on the left, particularly amongst the anarchist peasantry in the south. So inevitably, from the Church's side, only too glad to have the protection of the army.
