The Mamluk Empire - A New Mongol Offensive?
The Mamluk Empire was formed in the 1260s. By 1280, only a handful of cities and fortresses are still in Frankish or Western European hands. The Mongols launch an offensive into Syria to take on the Mamluks. They fight at least traditionally in a manner very similar to the Mongols. And it seems ultimately that a Mamluk charge against the central formation of the Mongol army caused the Mongol leader to withdraw temporarily,. which was then taken as a signal for the army as a whole to withdraw. That was then followed by a rout. But despite being very heavily outnumbered is still sufficient to drive the Mongols back and win the battle of Homs in 1281
