Is Black History a Professional Discipline?
In the Victorian era, there was a real desire to show Britain as having kind of Anglo-Saxon beginnings. And I think that that has probably played into to why Black history sometimes has been ignored or kind of swept under the carpet at times. The fall of the British Empire may also have contributed to people wanting to step away from thinking about Britain almost as a multi-racial empire and just focus on Britain as being a white place.
