The Importance of Humour in Poetry

I use humour quite a lot to talk about things which are actually quite dark and quite deep and quite scary. But if you use humour, then you can take a path in there that is easier than going straight to the brutal. So I've used humour a lot and written about cervical smears and periods and now I'm writing about menopause. There we go. Using humour has been a really important part. You must remember, of course, my early gigs and the way I started was in a very male dominated period. Yes, you left Hastings, moved to London in the 90s. Yeah. One of the few women on that scene, how did that inform your work?
