The current interpret, the dominant interpretation of Lincoln was constructed in the 1960s. The generation that came of age then, like Eric Foner, would look at Lincoln and say he was great for two reasons. He helped the black people, just like LBJ did, and John F. Kennedy did. And he created a federal government that was powerful enough to do that in the future.
