secular historians at the time, people who weren't involved in religious life. They still live within a society that is heavily shaped by religion. Just because they are not part of a religious munity like a monastery, o similar. That doesn't mean they don't operate along similar lines when it comes to conceptualizing the role of an individual or society on a larger path which ultimately is geared towards a salvation.
