Gordon of khartoum is a multi-dimensional historical character. He was used as an instrument for the advancement of british imperial interests, despite his own best intentions. For all his faults, Gordon's intentions were essentially good. I think he was sometimes very naive about the people who were employing him and what their intentions were. And so gordon is a very, very interesting character from that point of view.
