Melinda baldwin: It can be hard to imagine a system of scientific publishing that doesn't have nature at the top of the hierarchy in terms of prestige. When it was founded in 18 69 by the astronomer norman lockier, a, lockyer's motivation was actually not to create a prestigeous scientific journal but one written for laymen. She says he wanted his readership to be people from across all fields and strata of society.
