The Importance of Language in Music Theory

Ornette Coleman and Bob Dylan are artists whose art takes place within a self created system. It's sort of a doing a modernist thing but not in the way that the classical high modernists did. Education actually can only threaten it because there's a danger to it. Arnold Schunberg for example isn't just going to compose music in a newly atonal fashion which is to say without a sense of a home pitch or a tonic as we say. But he'll also create an entire system within which atonal composition can be managed systematically.
