Left wing voters in the us tend to be more geographically concentrated. This results in a huge number of wasted votes for victorious candidates. Ant, it reinforces these pre existing tensions between areas and their geographical divides. And when partisans get grafted onto that kind of rural split or tension, it tends to polarise politics.
