The Role of Collagen in Knee Arthroscopy
The knee meniscus are crescent-shaped wedges of fibrocartilage composed mainly of type 1 collagen. The anterior cruciate ligament as well as the anulus fibrosis of the intervertebral disc are all predominantly composed oftype 1 collagen. Articular cartilage primarily consists of type 2 collagen. Collinigens are responsible for the tensile strength of the meniscus and are predominantly type 1 collagen, specifically 90% type 1 collagen with variable amounts of type 2, 3, 5, and 6 collagen.
