The Problem With Canon Law on Penalties
In order to impose an excommunication on someone, that offense has to be explicitly listed in the canon law as deserving excommunication. Nowhere in canon law does it say that a Catholic politician who is pro-choice and votes pro-choice is to be excommunicated. And there's an awful lot of disagreement among bishops about that,. "I don't understand it because there's no confusion about it in canon law," she says.
