By 1943, there is a sense that nobody in Germany now thinks that whatever is happening to the Jews of Europe is anything less than lethal. But what happens at the end of the war is their get-out clauses. The post-war German question is very, very, very fraught. I think there are a lot of residual Nazi attitudes.
