In 2013, Rush strangled and beat his ex-girlfriend after she refused to have sex with him before work. He was forced to take domestic violence awareness training courses through the U.S. Navy. In January of 2014, six months before Rush met Megan on plenty of fish, another relationship ended in violence. A fight between Rush and an estranged girlfriend of his escalated to a physical fight. She carried a small gun for protection and when he lunged at her, she shot him in the groin.
