Slavery has existed worldwide for millennia. It was considered perfectly normal in the 15th or 16th century for people to own slaves across the world. So it was a pretty global practice of people owning slaves. And you see the way that this evolved was that instead of massacring people when one kingdom conquered another they decided it was more profitable and more humane to make them slaves. That was the usual pattern for conquest in pre-modern times.
