Maoist China - Why Are State-Owned Enterprises Important?
Maoist China squeezed the countryside to industrialize and the result was these massive state-owned enterprises or SOEs. Most of the fixed asset investment in the Chinese economy has been financed by state bank lending. So if the Chinese state's capital has overwhelmingly come from exports, why are the SOEs important historically speaking? What role have they played and how should we think about the relationship between the export economy and the SOEs created under Mao?
