The Material Culture of Drone Metal
Drone metal is a form of extreme music that's very droning, dirge-like. The real interest in vinyl as kind of creating a separate space and time in which to listen like people preferred to listen on vinyl rather than digital formats. And I think that really spoke to the kind of construction of ideas about ritual and mysticism in this kind of music. There was a deliberate attempt to separate drone metal in sort of space and time but also conceptually as something kind of set apart. That notion of specialness is something that I've actually come across in a few places.
