In much of continental Europe, it was socialist parties and their social democratic governments that liberalized to the economy against their stated programs. How did that all change with the onset of the crises of the 1970s, most dramatically perhaps with Mitterrand in France? And how did the provisional resolution of those crises in the 1980s pave the way for the rise of a European union?
