Pity is a natural sentiment which by moderating in every individual the activity of self-love contributes to the mutual preservation of the whole species. In riots and street brawls the populace flock together, the prudent man sneaks off. They are the drags of the people that part the combatants and hinder gentle folks from conjuring one another's throats. Savage Man wants this admirable talent.
