The hookworm was a parasitic infection and also viewed as an attack. There's this belief that Asians coming from Mexico and the Philippines that they carried hookworm. So you have Asians coming along the US-Mexico border and there were these, you know, very real fears that they were carrying hookworm across the border  and then spreading them throughout the US.
