Ned Kelly's Black Douglas
The narrative of Douglas killing a white woman at a voca is still a threat. But it also helps to restore their ideas about how the world should work. Women are meant to be the weaker sex at this time, they're meant to be in need of male protection. So instead of the diggers who rose up to catch her, Douglas being seen as vigilantes or a threat to law and order, they can be recast as righteous avengers.
