The Relationship Between a Man and His Legal Wife
Marriage in the roman world was understood first and foremost as a cntract that was about producing eirs. A man could have literally dozens of children who weren't the children of his married partner, the mother of his heirs. The agent of consent was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Women were seeing as pawns that their family could place on the game board to put the family in a stronger position by creating allegiances with other families.
