functional mri is the same machine that does themari for you, your knee cans. Instead of measuring tissue, we're measuring changes in brain metabolism. So when you make half sinks about thoughts, an do some sensory processing, your brain uses oxygen. Changes in oxygen levels affects a local a magnetic field. And this is picked up by the scanner. The reason that is different from pet is that it's non invasive.
