Carl worked until his fingernails were loose, which was actually a common part of his trade because arsenic made it difficult to keep one's fingernails. He felt deeply unsettled that he could see the character in the animal's face. On the journey back to New York, Carl re-evaluated his life and would no longer kill animals and stuff them and put them in museums.
