History of the Speed Limit
In 19 87, congress acknowledged the back lash by raising the speed limit to 65 miles per hour on all rural interstate highways. In 19 95, the law was scrapped altogether, and the right to determine speed limits was handed back to individual states. It was a sad day for some; small towns along the highways had made a fortune off of speeding fines and fees. For every one else, the law's repeal was a welcome return to the days of sense speeding.
