I mean, Marx and Engels don't mean that there's been this constant self-conscious class conflict throughout all time. And in actual fact, look, the classes on the whole get along fine. There's lots of cooperation. So they start not with a criticism of capitalism, but with a claim about the nature of history. They talk about the specific shape that that historical tendency is taking under capitalism.
