Wei Zhongxian was appointed head of the dreaded Eastern Depot, a UNIC security agency answerable only to the throne. Donglin figures were equally outspoken against UNIC involvement in military affairs. Yang Lin accused Wei of 24 crimes, including usurping Imperial authority and manipulating civil service appointment procedures. The accusations rocked the entire imperial court to its core.
