The Prohibition and Protectionism of Cotton
When India cotton prints came in, there were this amazing, highly competitive product. In Britain, they didn't like it. So they were banned in Holland. And in France, the silk industry was really felt threatened. They basically treated calico's as they were known, the way the US treats cocaine. The penalties people could go to for trafficking in these clogs. It was the most extreme example of prohibition and protectionism that I've come across. Deirdre Galakos: How is this not famous?
