The Scar Is a Book Set in a World in Which Inequality Is a Real Problem
There's an interesting paradox, lik seems to me, in terms of the representation of gender. If you come from a position that gender is an issue, and that things are not perfect, therea there are two, in some ways, quitecontradictory ways that you can address that aesthetically in fiction. The scar is very clearly a book set in a world in which gener in equality is a real problem. Then the gender relations on the train, in railse, if anyone's read that, is the opposite,. it is essentially er, you know, a kind of relativelycid of a convivial depictionof a collective in which gender is not really an issue.
