i'm joined to day by julie cummings, whose new book is medicine in the middle ages. The theory of the four humors originated with aristotle, but hippocrates is really the one that was credited with the development of it all. It goes back to ancient greece and they believed that the body was made up of four different humors - yellow bil, black, vil, blood and flam. And your personality was also believed to have been greatly affected by whether or not your humours were in balance.
