In 1984, every single action is scrutinized by the government. You can't even use the bathroom without being monitored. If you make so much as one mistake, maybe you critique a tiny little thing that the government does, such as the DMV could be a bit faster, you're going to jail. The KGB shaped Soviet society more profoundly than any institution. Those who joined the ranks of the KGB, they were KGB for life. There's no leaving.
