Is There Much Conversation About Gender in the Interwar Period?
Gender very definitely is being discussed in the interwar period. The 1920s, 1930s is a crucial turning point in a whole series of ways. People are actively debating and contesting whether men and women are intrinsically different - which I'm sure was a justification for treating them differently. And if they are different, are they different or equal? So, all of that is being contested. At the same time, categories of sexual difference, like the category of the homosexual, start to be talked about quite widely. Now, unfortunately and tragically, we know that what happens in the 1930s is that the world takes an enormous lurch to the authoritarian right. A lot of those opportunities for gender
