The Consensus Is That Energy Is Not Conserved
There's not really a good well-defined way to calculate the gravitational energy of the whole universe. The gravitational density so they say that doesn't really count. You can't include it in the calculation energy is not conserved. I think what I'm getting is that physics is maybe as fickle and sensical as the art world, you're saying.
