Hackers can insert their trojan source code into computer programs. They do this into open source programming projects like lennox or cubernetes. This kind of stuff could sit inside code libraries for years without anybody noticing the problem. There are several mitigation techniques that the authors talk about, but the real trick is to get the compiler makers to look for the tech in their own software.
