The Story of Atoue and the Resistance to Spanish Colonization
There are stories though that are really important about indigenous resistance to Spanish colonization. There's a famous story that's oft repeated, it was first told to us by the Spanish priest Bartolome de las Casas of an indigenous man named Atoue. He famously asked our Spaniards in heaven or Christians in heavens and he said, no thanks, I won't go there - so he burned at the stake without accepting the word of God. It didn't change the outcome for him but he then became this symbol to the present in the 19th century in the period of the Cuban struggle for independence and beyond.
