Nigeria is struggling with severe cash shortages, with riots erupting across the country just days before a presidential election. The people are still not turning to the national digital currency, which promised to improve retail payments. One year after the launch of the E-Nira, less than one half of one percent of Nigerians were using it. But even if people in Nigeria wanted to turn to the E- Nira, transaction options with the central bank digital currency or CBDC are limited.
