It was much more difficult for women to receive medals and recognition at that time. One of the best examples of this is Elizabeth Sedmire again who was stationed in Baghdad when there was a coup  in 1957. She stayed undercover so that she could protect the spy network that she had built there and keep sending intelligence back to the US. It took years it took years of her chief of station fighting for her for Liz to finally receive this medal. That medal is now in the hands of her niece who shares her name who's also Elizabeth oh.
